I want to create some Meal Plans but I notice that it can be a lot of work to produce a quality Meal Plan. Is there an easier way?

Yes. Import a NutriBase Meal Plan by starting NutriBase, clicking the Meal Plan Icon, then clicking the Import Button. Once you've imported a Meal Plan, you can edit it to comply with your specific desires. When you import a Meal Plan, all recipes, PFI's, used in the Meal Plan are automatically copied to your edition of NutriBase Software.

Whenever I add a food item to a recipe or to a client's intake, NutriBase prompts me to ask if I really want to do this. This annoys me. Can I turn these prompts off?

Yes. Click on the "Preferences" option in the Menu Bar at the top of the NutriBase screen. You can set your preferences for when you want NutriBase to prompt you.

After I select a food category and click on the View Icon to look at it, I see the Food Names and some nutrient data in a spreadsheet format. Is that all the information that there is?

No. Click on the horizontal and vertical scroll bars (on the bottom and right side of the screen) to move horizontally and vertically through the data. This spreadsheet view lets you compare similar food items with items listed above and below them.

Can I highlight a single food item so that I can follow its nutritional information more easily as I scroll horizontally through the data?

Yes. Just right-mouse-click on the food item's Food Name. This will highlight the entire line for you. This option also works in split-screen mode.

My client takes a multiple vitamin every day. He also drinks three glasses of milk, a yogurt, two slices of whole wheat bread and a bowl of shredded wheat every day. I hate having to record these items to his intake day-after-day. Isn't there a better, faster, easier way?

Yes. Click on the Intake Recorder Icon. Select the "Auto-Record Food Items" option. You can select as many or as few clients as you wish. Then simply record the food items that this client (or clients) eats every day. Save it. From now on, NutriBase will automatically record the food items you specified for this client every time you record an item (for the first time that day) for that client.

I am recording an intake for a husband and wife. They eat just about the same meals together. It would save me a lot of time if NutriBase let me copy the husband's intake to the wife's intake. Can it?

Yes. Go ahead an record the husband's intake. Then click on the Intake Recorder Icon and select "Copy an Intake from Client-to-Client." After you copy what the husband ate to the wife's intake, you can edit the wife's intake to account for any differences.

Can I view all of the information for a single food item on the screen at one time?

Yes. Use your mouse cursor to point at any food item (or anywhere on a row of data), then double-click your left mouse button to see all of the nutritional information for that food item in a single-food summary. You can also select the food item, then click the Normal Button.) To see all the data (nutrients plus all available variables), select the food item, then click the All Button. The single-item summary is a scrolling list box - use the vertical scroll bar to view all of the nutrient data. In the single food summary, you can export the information to a file, copy it to the Windows clipboard, print it, record the food item as an intake, or add the food item to a recipe.

My doctor ordered me to consume fewer calories than NutriBase recommends for me based on my current life situation. Can I override the calorie requirement setting calculated by NutriBase?

Yes. You simply edit the calories calculated for you by NutriBase Diet Software.

I calculate % Calories from Fat by using the "4-4-9 method." Is this the same way NutriBase calculates calories?

Yes and No. USDA calorie ratios were calculated using the conversion factors provided by the USDA. For USDA-provided "formulations" (multi-ingredient foods), which did not include conversion factors, values were calculated using the straight 4-4-9 method. And for NutriBase brand name food items, calorie ratios were derived by using CyberSoft's compensated 4-4-9 method.

When I am viewing the nutrient data, is it possible for me to quickly jump to a particular food item or brand name?

Yes. Click on the Jump Button. The Jump option provides a listing of every unique food name (or brand name) in the food categories you have selected.

I drink Grainaissance brand "Amazake" sesame brown rice beverage twice a day. But I'm getting very tired of selecting "Beverages," then "Other," then scrolling until I find this listing so that I can record it. Isn't there a faster way?

Yes. Locate the food item once. Highlight it by right-mouse-clicking on its food name, then click on the PFI Button. This adds the selected food item to your Personal Food Items notebook. You can organize these PFI's into separate notebook tabs if you wish. You can also add tabs, rename tabs, or delete PFI tabs. And you can edit the food item to update it if you wish. Adding your most frequently eaten foods to your PFI Manager will save you a lot of time and reduce the number of times you need to look up the same food.

After I create a recipe, can I use it in a client's intake or in another recipe?

Yes. Click on the Recipe Manager Icon, locate your recipe, highlight it by (right-mouse-clicking on its food name), then click the Intake Button to add the recipe to the selected client's intake. Click the Recipe Button to add the selected recipe to a new or existing recipe. You can organize your recipes by copying them to the other Recipe Manager notebook tabs. You can also add tabs, rename tabs, or delete tabs.

Why would I ever want to rank a group of foods?

A ranking is a sorted list of food items. A sorted list is handy because the food items are listed in ascending or descending order based on the value for a nutrient in which you are interested. For instance, you might wish to rank all ready-to-serve breakfast cereals from high-to-low based on their fiber content. When you do this, the first cereal in your display contains the most fiber, the second cereal listed contains the second most fiber, etc. You can perform rankings on any food category and on any nutrient.

Why would I ever want to perform a query?

Queries let you locate and display the foods that meet all of the requirements you specify. You can specify the criteria for as many or as few of the nutrients as you wish. Just about any question you can construct regarding the data, you can answer with a NutriBase query. The query function lets you locate all the foods that meet all your criteria. For instance, you can locate all the foods that have at least 2 grams of Protein, no more than 360 mg of Sodium, no more than 30% of its calories from Fat, no more than 2 grams of Saturated Fat, at least 10 IU's of Vitamin E, and so on. You can specify as many or as few nutrients as you wish. You can even specify every nutrient in the database if you wish.

I am looking for all occurrences of food names containing "BRAN" anywhere in the food name. Can NutriBase do this?

Yes. Click on the Food Name Search Icon, then select the "Global Food Name Search." Type in the string "BRAN". Then click on the OK Button. NutriBase will locate every occurrence of every food name that contains the string "BRAN" anywhere in any food name.

Okay, I can view all foods of a particular brand name by using the query function. But isn't there an easier way to do this?

Yes. Click on the Food/Brand Search Icon. Select the Brand Name Search option. Type in the Brand names you wish to locate, then click the OK Button.

My client ate 1 3/4 cups of brown rice today. When I went to record this into her intake, I didn't find a 1 3/4 cup serving size. So I recorded a 1 cup serving. How do I record what she actually ate?

After you've assembled all the intake items that you wish to record for your client, click on the Intake Recorder Icon. Double-click on the brown rice entry. This brings up the Edit a Single Food Item dialog box. Click on the Serving Size Button, then select the units and enter the amount. You can enter "1.75", "1 3/4", or 1-3/4" for your amount. NutriBase will accept decimals or fractions, then do the conversions for you.

After I finished recording a client's intake, I noticed a "happy face" on the date I recorded to on the client's calendar (when I clicked on the Intake Recorder Icon). What does this mean?

It means that your client complied with all of her "Happy Face Criteria." You established the happy face criteria when you logged the client onto the system. You can modify them at any time (do so by clicking on the Client Setups Icon, then selecting "Modify a Client's Goals"). On days when your client doesn't meet her happy face goals, she will receive an unhappy face (a "happy face" that looks like it's been run over by a truck). Clicking on the Intake Recorder Icon gives you an indication as to how your client is progressing. Keep in mind that a single saltine cracker can make the difference between your client earning a happy face or an unhappy face. Happy faces indicate that your client is on track and sticking "with the program."

One of my clients has the same intake day after day (he eats basically the same things every day). Do I have to record the same things over and over every day?

No. Record his intake for the first day, then simply copy his intake for that day to any other day (or days) you wish to duplicate the intake. Do this by clicking on the Intake Recorder Icon. Then select the "Copy an Intake from Client to Client." (This option will let you copy from your client to other days of the same client.) After you copy a day's intake, you can edit the new day to adjust for any deviations from the original intake.

I made a mistake in the food items I recorded yesterday for my intake. Is it too late to make any changes?

No--it's never too late. Make sure you are the active client, then click on the Intake Recorder Icon. Select a date from the calendar. You can edit the data then save it.

I want to avoid any food item with more than 500 mg of sodium. Can NutriBase warn me when I am selecting foods with more than 500 mg of sodium?

Yes. Click on the Client Functions Icon. Make sure you are the active client. Click on the Modify Client Goals option. On the second page of this option, click the Set Alarms Button. From here, you can program in any set of alarms that you wish. NutriBase client alarms may be individualized for each of five, ten, 1,000, or an unlimited number of clients (depending on the NutriBase edition you are using).

I would like to monitor my weight changes. Can NutriBase help me?

Yes. Click on the Information Tracker Icon. Select the Weight and Body Fat option. Click the Enter Values Button to enter in your weight. You can enter your weight (or body fat values) for one day or for many days if you wish. You can also generate a report or graph of your clients' weight histories.

I like the Quote of the Day feature. Will NutriBase let me view additional quotations and health tips on demand?

Yes. When the Quote of the Day dialog box is on the screen, you can click on the Next Button or the Previous Button to view quotes (or health and dieting tips). You can turn off the Quote of the Day feature through the User Preferences option. And if you click on the Info menu bar option, you can view "Diet Tips and Ideas," "Health and Diet Facts," or "Quotations for Dieters."

I'd like to get a printout of that shows me my personal goals. Can I do that?

Yes. Click on the Client Setups Icon. Select the "Client-Specific Report" option. Select the items you wish to include in your report, then click the OK Button. Your report will appear in the word processor, ready to format, print, save, etc. (Your actual options will depend on the version of NutriBase you are using.)

Can NutriBase perform a "Three-Day Intake Report" for what my client's have eaten?

Yes. For a summary of the three days, click on the Analyze Icon. Select your options to customize your intake report. When you are specifying the dates, cherry pick the dates you wish to include for your three days. After you are ready to generate the report, click on the button at the bottom of the Analyze window to perform the analysis. It should be apparent that you can perform a three day intake, a four-day intake, or a seven-day intake if you like. And the days don't have to be contiguous - you can cherry pick the days you want to include.

How often should I update my client's personal goals?

A good time to consider updating your client's personal goals is whenever their body weight changes by five or more pounds. As your client's body weight changes, so does her metabolism (and consequently, her caloric requirements). A simple update involves entering a new starting weight whenever your weight changes five to ten pounds. To do this, click on the Client Setups Icon and select the "Modify a Client's Goals" Option. Keep in mind that the new client goals take effect from the date they are modified. They do not affect previous entries unless you open them and re-save them using the newly modified goals.

I just can't seem to view as much nutrient data on the screen as I would like. Isn't there something I can do to get more nutrient data onto the screen?

Yes. You can make your columns narrower by resizing the columns of data. NutriBase will remember your new settings for you. You can click on the Zoom Button (the down-pointing arrow) in the lower-right section of the screen to make the data font smaller (and therefore display more columns of data at once). You can increase your screen resolution. If you are using 640 x 480, try 800 x 600. If you are using 800 x 600, try using 1024 x 768, etc.

Is it possible to see Amino Acid data while also looking at the Protein data?

Yes. Perform a Food Name Search, a Brand Name Search, or perform a View Data, Rank Data, or Query Data option to display the data to the screen. The click on the Split Button at the bottom of the nutrient display screen. This opens up the split-screen view. The vertical scroll bar is synchronized with both sides of the data, but each side of the splitter bar contains its own horizontal scroll bar. Use the horizontal scroll bar to view data from two different areas of the data.

I use NutriBase Professional but I have a client who uses the NutriBase Personal Edition. I want to give her a customized Meal Plan to follow on a day-by-day basis using her version of NutriBase. Does NutriBase provide a convenient way for me to do this?

Yes. Create a customized Meal Plan (start by clicking on the Meal Plan Icon). Then click the Export Button to export the Meal Plan to a 3.5" diskette. Give the diskette to your client and tell her to import the Meal Plan to her NutriBase Personal Nutrition Manager. After she imports it, instruct her to copy the Meal Plan as a client's intake (making sure to select herself as that client). To view her intake for a particular date, she needs to click on the Intake Recorder Icon.

My client has been following the customized Meal Plan I created for her. She has been doing this electronically using NutriBase Personal Nutrition Manager. Her version of NutriBase is limited in its analysis capabilities. Can I perform a more in-depth analysis of her intake for her?

Yes. Have her backup her NutriBase information to a 3.5" diskette. (She will click on the Backup and Restore Icon to do this.) Take the diskette and restore her information to your PC. Perform the analysis.

My client doesn't have a PC and doesn't use NutriBase. I want to set her up with a customized Meal Plan. Can NutriBase help me?

Yes. Create your custom Meal Plan. Then analyze it by clicking on the Analyze Icon. Produce a Meal Plan Summary Report. Include the checklist option, the comment field option, and the page-break option. Print it out. Give the Meal Plan Summary to your client and instruct her to check off the foods as she eats them and make comments in the space provided whenever she deviates from the Meal Plan. Since there are page breaks between the Meal Plan days, it should be convenient for her to carry a day's Meal Plan with her wherever she goes.

I created a great Meal Plan for a client recovering from heart surgery. I want to record this Meal Plan as his intake for the next month, but I sure don't want to record every food item into his intake by hand... that could take me days. Can NutriBase help me?

Yes. Click on the Meal Planner Icon. Click on the Copy To Button. Select the "Copy a Meal Plan to a Client's Intake" option. You can then select the Meal Plan, the Clients, and the start dates.

I created a great Meal Plan for a client recovering from heart surgery. I am creating another Meal Plan for another client in a similar situation, but she's older and smaller than my other client. Rather than starting over from scratch, can I modify an existing Meal Plan and adapt it to my new client?

Yes. Click on the Meal Planner Icon. Select the existing Meal Plan that you want to use as a starting point for a new Meal Plan. Click on the Save As Button. Save the existing Meal Plan under a new name then edit the new Meal Plan by selecting it and clicking the Edit Button.

I just recorded a customized Meal Plan to my client's intake. When I view this client's calendar, I notice that all the faces are blue "neutral faces." Why are they not "Happy Faces?"

When you record a Meal Plan to a client's intake, NutriBase records the Meal Plan to each day of that client's intake. It assumes, however, that the client may deviate from the Meal Plan. After you edit for any deviations and then save the intake day, NutriBase will determine what kind of face belongs there and generate it for you.

My client just ate a "picture-perfect" intake for four weeks. I can't bear the thought of manually entering in all those food items into a new Meal Plan. Can I just copy this client's four-week intake into a Meal Plan?

Yes. Click on the Meal Planner Icon. Click on the Copy To Button. Select the "Copy a Client's Intake to a Meal Plan" option. Provide the information required. Make sure to click the box next to "Copy into New Meal Plan" to create a new Meal Plan.

I have a client who insists he does not want to reduce the calorie intake specified by the Meal Plan I gave him. Yet he want to lose another 10 pounds. Can I do get around this calorie complaint?

Yes. Increase his exercise calorie goals by whatever level you need to shed those 10 pounds within a given time frame. Click the Client Setups Icon and click the "Modify a Client's Goals" option to do this. Increase the exercise calorie goals as needed. These changes will be automatically updated in the client's Happy Face Criteria (if you've specified exercise calories as one of this client's goals). Remember that 500 calories a day = 3,500 calories a week = one pound of weight loss.

I'd like to print a recipe. Does NutriBase provide a convenient way for me to do this?

Yes. Click on the Recipe Manager Icon and double-click on the recipe you are interested in. Then click on the Report Button. You have two options here. You can generate a basic report (which includes basic nutrient information) or you can generate a compact recipe that puts the data into as compact a form as possible and excludes nutrient information. Use the Analyze function if you want in-depth nutrient information for every nutrient.

I have created a collection of low-fat, low-sodium recipes. I'd like to publish them on my web site. Does NutriBase provide a convenient way for me to do this?

Yes. Click on the Recipe Manager Icon and click on the Report Button. Generate a recipe report. If you want more detailed information, use the Analyze Program. Select "HTML files" under the "Save Files as type:" drop-down menu. Give it a name. Click the OK Button. That's all there is to it.

I just created my mother's wonderful recipe for teriyaki sauce. But I notice that it contains too much Sodium for my client's needs. I want to edit the recipe to remove much of the Sodium. Can NutriBase help me identify where all that sodium is coming from?

Yes. Click on the Recipe Manager Icon and double-click on the recipe you are interested in. Then click on the Compose Button. Select Sodium. Tell NutriBase you want the ingredients ranked (sorted) from high-to-low. Click the OK Button.

I had one of my clients write down everything they ate for the past three days. When I entered this diet in as a three-day intake, NutriBase showed me he was averaging 57% of his calories from fat. Can NutriBase show me where all this fat is coming from, ranked from highest fat food item to the lowest?

Yes. Click on the Intake Recorder Icon and double-click on the recipe you are interested in. Then click on the Compose Button. Select Fat. Tell NutriBase you want the ingredients ranked (sorted) from high-to-low. Click the OK Button.

I have used the recipe reports included with NutriBase. But I need far more in-depth report (one that also includes an analysis for every ingredient) for a particular recipe. Can NutriBase handle this for me?

Yes. The Recipe Manager can produce three reports for you. If you need more information, click on the Analyze Program Icon. Select to analyze a recipe and select the nutrients you wish to analyze. You can perform a very detailed report for this recipe, including the nutrient information for every ingredient if you wish.

You can select which ingredients you wish to include in your shopping list. You can perform a similar operation with any nutrient intake (accessed by clicking the Intake Recorder Icon).

I want to print out a Client Goal Summary for a particular client. Can I do this?

Yes. Click on the Client Setups Icon and select "Client-Specific Reports." Select the items you wish to include in your report, then click on the OK Button.
Another way to do this is to click on the Analyze Icon. Select an intake as your analysis type. When you specify what information items you wish to include, select the client goals you wish to include. You may include as much or as little information as you wish. (This method is most useful when you plan to include a lot of information in addition to the client's goals.)

I have a client who is begging me to print out the "Happy Face" Calendar for him. Is this possible?

(That is, hold down the Alt key, then while still holding it down, press the Print Scrn key. Then release both keys.) This copies the calendar image to the Windows Clipboard. Now open your word processor then press "Alt-v" (Hold down the Alt key, then press the "v" key.) This will paste the calendar to your word processor page. Use this procedure to copy any dialog box or image into a report or image editor.

Can I analyze NutriBase nutrient data in an external database?

Yes (if you are using the Professional or Clinical version). Simply export the data to a file by clicking on the Export Data Icon. The column headers will be exported into the first row. Start your database and import the file into your database. Virtually all databases can import a delimited ASCII file. You can also export selected data from nutrient displays.

I am overwhelmed when I have to scroll horizontally through column after column of nutritional information when I am only interested in viewing Calories, Protein and Vitamin C for the food items I am examining. Can I customize NutriBase to only display these three nutrients?

Yes. You can create a list of nutrients for NutriBase to display whenever you look at nutrient data. Do this by clicking on the Nutrient Selection List Icon. Create an NSL that contains Calories, Protein and Vitamin C, then give it a descriptive name, such as "Calories, Protein, and Vit-C". Select it. From then on, you will display the nutrients you specified in this new NSL.

I have created an NSL that displays only Calories, Protein and Vitamin C for the food items I am examining. However, I wish to create recipes using the food items I have located and I want the nutritional summaries to include all nutrients - not just the three I told NutriBase to display. Can NutriBase handle this for me?

Yes. NutriBase does this for you automatically. The Nutrient Selection List tells NutriBase which nutrients to display to the screen. But NutriBase looks up the values for all nutrients every time you conduct a search and uses all of these values in recipes, in intakes, and in analyses. Of course "all nutrients" differs from version to version of NutriBase Diet Software.

I want to create a custom set of nutrient goals for some clients with some very special nutritional requirements. Can NutriBase help me?

Click the Save Button to save the new set of nutrient goals under a new name.

I want to include her personal information and goals, her exercise goals, her alarm settings and her happy face criteria. Yes. Click on the Client Setups Icon. Select "Modify a Client's Goals." Enter in the Body Fat Percentages and make any necessary adjustments.

I want to create a document for a client that contains a number of dieting tips. Can NutriBase help me?

You can view, edit, format, and/or print this information. If you are using the Professional or Clinical version of NutriBase, you can edit this document then Save As or print it for your client. You can do the same for all other information listed in the Info section of NutriBase, including food glossaries, food substitutions, motivational quotations for dieters, etc.

I notice that NutriBase comes with 70 or so exercises already programmed in. But my clients only perform about a half-dozen of them. I find myself scrolling through the entire list every time I need to select an exercise. But I don't want to delete any of them in case I need them one of these days. Can NutriBase help me?

Yes. Just move the exercises your client's don't perform too often into the Infrequent Exercise List.

I performed an exercise that I don't normally perform. This exercise is listed in my Infrequent Exercise list, but not in my Frequent List. I don't really want to move it to the Frequent List to record it because I don't plan on ever engaging in this particular activity ever again. Can NutriBase help me?

Yes. In the Exercise Manager dialog box, click on the Infrequent Button. Select the infrequent exercise and click on the Select Button. Edit the exercise and click the Record Button.

Once you have this saved, click on the "Prefs" option of the Menu Bar across the top of the NutriBase screen. Click on the "Add text header to reports" option. NutriBase will auto-insert this text header into your report for you until you change your user preferences at a later date.

I want to include a report header that includes my logo as well as company name, my name, telephone numbers, and e-mail address. I want it automatically inserted at the top of the reports I create for my clients. Can NutriBase help me do this?

Yes. Create a bit map using any bit map editor. Save it in the headers subdirectory (located under your NutriBase directory) as "header.bmp". Once you have this saved, click on the "Prefs" option of the Menu Bar across the top of the NutriBase screen. Click on the "Add bitmap header to reports" option.
